Do the library's videos include public performance rights?

Answer

Are you looking to show a film in your classroom or other campus setting? The library provides access to two streaming video collections: Academic Video Online (AVON) and Kanopy BASE. All AVON and Kanopy films may be shown in the classroom, but you will want to check for public performance rights, or for any conditions that limit public performance rights, before showing films from these collections in other campus settings.

AVON Public Performance Rights

AVON's public performance rights FAQ states: "All films purchased or subscribed to through Alexander Street, whether streaming or DVD, include limited public performance rights, which includes permission for classroom showings, as well as on-campus or in-library public screenings, as long as no admission is being charged."

Kanopy BASE

Kanopy's public performance rights FAQ states: "If you're a student or faculty member, you can use any Kanopy film in your class. Films with public performance rights (PPR) can be used for extracurricular events, like film clubs or social events."

You can find films with PPR on the Kanopy website by applying the "Public Performance" filter to your search results:

What about Netflix? Disney? Hulu?

Netflix does not offer public performance rights on any of its content; however, some Netflix original content may be shown in the classroom. Please see Netflix's FAQ on educational screenings for more information.

At the present time, other commercial streaming services such as Hulu do not allow for educational screenings in their license terms.

How about a DVD from the library's collection?

A DVD from the library's collection may be show in the classroom; however, in general, the library's DVDs do not include public performance rights, limited or otherwise.
